Over 9,000 Nigerians currently studying in Canadian Varsities, says Envoy

The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Perry Calderwood, on Wednesday revealed that no fewer than 9,000 Nigerians are currently studying in various Canadian Universities.

This was contained in a press statement issued by the Deputy Registrar, Information, University of Lagos, (UNILAG), Olagoke Oke, in Lagos.

The envoy also said that there was the need for further collaborations between both countries in the area of academics, to create better understanding that would promote cultural, economic and other ties.

“We have over 9,000 Nigerian students currently studying in Canada and I want to say this is a good trend. “This is my second visit to this university and I am delighted to be here again,” the statement quoted Calderwood .

The envoy in the statement said, “I hope that this visit will further lead to exploring partnership with the university also in the area of entrepreneurship, students and scholars’ exchange programme and capacity building.”

The UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, said that Nigeria had a lot of good institutions operating in academic friendly environment. Bello drew the attention of the High Commissioner to the University’s Foundation programmes, with over six partner-universities worldwide.

According to the statement, the university is also prepared for an exploration of partnership agreement with Canadian universities through him. (Image: CanadaInternational).
