Nigerian newlywed couple, Dozie Okoye, a banker at Zenith Bank, and his wife, Joan Gusiora-Okoye, a nurse, who tragically lost their lives in a gas tanker explosion on March 11, 2025, have been laid to rest amidst an outpouring of grief from family and friends.
The couple had tied the knot just weeks earlier, on February 22, 2025, before meeting their untimely death in the fatal blast that occurred on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
A viral video circulating on social media captures the emotional burial ceremony, with mourners overwhelmed by sorrow and expression of their condolences as they bid farewell to the young couple.
But, beyond the grief lies an urgent call for action. Stakeholders in transportation, emergency management, and public safety must prioritize stricter enforcement of road regulations, ensure regular vehicle checks, and improve emergency response times to prevent future occurrences.
As their loved ones grapple with the devastating loss, the memory of Dozie and Joan Okoye lives on.
