Another Nigerian drug convict to be executed in Indonesia

Uncategorized

A Nigerian is among eight convicted drug smugglers to be executed for drug-related offences, an Indonesian Government official said yesterday.

This is despite the summoning of the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali, to protest the recent execution of two Nigerians, Solomon Okafor, (Alias Namaona Denils) and Daniels Enemuo, (Alias Diarrassoube Mamadou) by the Indonesian Government. Indonesia had brushed aside last-minute appeals by foreign leaders and executed the two Nigerians alongside five others convicted of drug trafficking, sending a message that the new government will not compromise its tough approach to narcotics.

In the next batch of convicts to be executed are five men comprising an unnamed Nigerian and others from Ghana, France, Brazil and Indonesia, as well as a woman from the Philippines. They will face a firing squad after being moved to Nusa Kambangan prison, Attorney General’s Office spokesman Tony Spontana said, without giving exact dates. Six other drug smugglers, including five foreigners, were executed in January at the same prison, located off Indonesia’s main island of Java.

Foreign media reports quoted by the Abuja-based LEADERSHIP newspaper said the convicts “would be transferred to a prison island this week for imminent execution despite international appeals for clemency.”
