The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has described Ekiti State as one of the leading cultivation grounds for cannabis in the Southwest, Nigeria. Also in the same league in the cultivation of the psychotropic weed are Osun and Ondo States according to Thisday newspaper.
Speaking with THISDAY in Ado Ekiti on Friday, the NDLEA Commander in the State, Mr Suleiman Jadi revealed that over 400 acres of cannabis plantation have been discovered and destroyed at Ise Forest Reserve alone since inception . Jadi, who solicited for logistics to ease their operation, said processed drug totalling 67,200kg , worth about 67 tons was destroyed in a community in Ado Local Government , covering about 14 acres of land within the last three months. The NDLEA Commander disclosed that during the time under review, about 26.5 kgs.
of cannabis was destroyed in Ise Forest Reserved Area alone estimated at 27 tons , describing the trend as worrisome and dangerous to the youths, whom he said were major consumers . He added that a total of 23 suspects, including a notorious drug baron, were arrested in recent time while a total weight of 893kg of hard drug was seized.
