Impeachment move against Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker?

Except anything untoward happens, there will be a change of baton in the leadership of the Ekiti State government on Thursday, October 16, 2014.

As the indigenes of Ekiti State await the incoming government of Mr. Ayodele Fayose, tension is brewing in the State House of Assembly as the lawmakers, allegedly, plan to change its principal officers next week to reflect the current political reality in the state.

According to Guardian newspaper, the principal officers slated for removal are the Speaker, Hon. Adewale Omirin, the Deputy Speaker, Hon Taiwo Orisalade, the Majority Leader, Hon Churchill Adedipe, and Chief Whip, Hon Ade Ajayi, among others. The members of the Assembly were said to have met unofficially and agreed to carry out the change in leadership by next week.

Majority of the legislators reportedly met with Fayemi on Friday evening where they informed him of their decision to change the leadership of the Assembly. It was gathered that all entreaties by the outgoing governor to convince the legislators to avoid rocking the boat were rebuffed.

The Guardian reported that the Lawmakers were said to have hinged their decisions on the need to balance the political equation in the state among the three senatorial districts. Fayemi is from North Senatorial District, his Deputy, Prof Modupe Adelabu, from the Central, while the embattled Speaker, is from the South.

The equation would have to change with the emergence of Fayose, who is from the Central and his deputy, Dr Olusola Eleka, from the South, the same senatorial district with Omirin, which forms part of the reasons to move for the Speaker’s ouster, coupled with other external interference.
