Mrs. Aisha Buhari tries to shake hands with Alaafin of Oyo but Alaafin refused (See Photos)

The Alaafin’s official Facebook page shared these photos of Mrs Buhari trying to shake the hands of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, during an event at University of Maiduguri last week. As you can see, the Alaafin refused to stretch his hands and accept her handshake. Many suggested it was disrespectful for the wife of the president to greet the Alaafin that way.

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, commenting on the photos on Twitter wrote: “Can Aisha Buhari greet the Emir of Daura with a handshake as she is doing here to the Iku Baba Yeye, Alaafin of Oyo?”

Another twitter user @segalink, wrote: “Sacrilege; how uncouth can you be, trying to shake the Alaafin? Do you shake your Emirs?”

See below what Alaafin eventually did. The Alaafin now grabbed both hands of Mrs. Buhari in that greeting

  1. Eewo! Agbedo! It’s an ‘undone’thing. And Kabiyesi’s demenour must have demonstrated his sense of humour. He knows that the first lady does not have a clue about Yoruba cultural protocol. Rasheed evaluates the situation correctly. THERE should have been preparatory rehearsal in ‘meet and greet’ induction for the first lady while meeting with Nigerian Royalties. The Patriarchal value of the yorubas has not diminished to the level where any cititzen-male or female would handshake with an Oba in public. Even King-mothers/fathers still prostrate before the Oba in public.
The handlers, as they are termed must seek to know before – hand what protocols re in place with every Nigerian or International cultural values and beliefs.
A reflective experience for those chaperoning our dignitaries.

  2. Please, all of you sending verbal missiles at Ayisha, did any of you check if her handlers did their job properly? It’s tempting to want to compare late Miriam Babaginda with Ayisha but in all fairness, Ayisha has not the social expose Miriam had when it comes to CULTURAL INTERACTIONS.Therefore how can I personally in good faith totally blame Ayi for what happened.?
If there is a future evidence that pretty Ayi chose to ‘ignore cultural protocol’ then Sai Baba has to call her to order but until then, folks, let Ayi go! thank you all.
