Nigerian Governors say No to death penalty for convicted looters

Uncategorized

Many governors in Nigeria have said they do not support death penalty for convicted looters. They prefer life or long term imprisonment to the death penalty.

They said this when Punch tries to seek their opinion on a call by the Nigerian workers, the NLC and TUC that looters should henceforth face death penalty.

Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun state prefers life imprisonment and that punishment should be meted out to everyone found guilty of corruption and should not be limited to politicians.

Governors Ayodele Fayose and Nyesom Wike of Ekiti and Rivers states respectively prefer long term imprisonment sentences to the death penalty

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau state, like those mentioned above prefers long term of imprisonment.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko will go by the wishes of the people. Mimiko says if Nigerians want death penalty as punishment for looting, so be it.

Governor Rauf Aregbesola would not want to comment on whether or not looters should face death penalty. His media aide says no comment.

Like Mimiko of Ondo state, governor Al-Makura of Nasarawa state would support the wishes of the people on the punishment for treasury looting.

Media aides to governors Adams Oshiomhole of Edo and Ugwuanyi of Enugu state would need to consult with their principals before taking a stand.
