Nigerian commits suicide in Germany and is laid to rest

A Nigerian man has been buried in Germany days after he committed suicide.

Francis Ibegbulem, who lived in Altenstadt Bayern in Germany, killed himself shortly after getting fired from the company where he worked. He reportedly tried using a kitchen knife but when that didn’t work, he went to a forest and hanged himself. He was buried on Tuesday.

The Imo state indigene reportedly moved to Germany from Turkey in 2015 and was granted 3-year asylum. The reason he took his life isn’t known though friends say he complained that unseen forces were following him around. He also began talking aloud to himself and this led to him being fired from work.

  1. Hmm! Could this be interpreted as ignorance or abdication of responsibility by this man’s employers. It’s a surprise this happened in the west. All signs and symptoms of a mental health breakdown are apparent and he could have been supported to see a psychiatrist by friends or employer in such society where this service is widely available and free. Within its legislation, Germany has clauses of sectioning and a compulsion to assess and formulate treatment for all under the National Assistance Act, 1948. Symptoms such as depression and other neuroses conditions were prevalent. The least that could have been done was to refer him to a psychiatric unit for assessment and treatment formulation, which could have served as a cushion for his fall into more serious mental health disorders. For a diasporan, events and encounters in a work setting have its multi-dimensional psycho-social affects on the person. Internally, employers are guided to have a risk assessment plan whereby performance, well being and integrative capacity of individual members of the workforce are monitored and, intervened, where there is a cause for concern.
A shame this waste of human life was not prevented.
