Police in Ogun State have arrested a nurse, Titilayo, for allegedly stealing a newborn baby boy in Arogun village in Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state.
Titilayo, who is the proprietor of a private clinic in the village, was alleged to have stolen the baby boy after taking his delivery.
The nurse, who took the delivery of the baby in her clinic last June 13, was said to have lied to his mother that she had a stillbirth.
Titilayo was, however, arrested last Friday by police detectives from Ewekoro Division when the mother, who had got the information that the nurse had a baby in her possession, reported the matter to the police.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the arrest of the nurse, “The good sympathizers in the community noticed that the nurse, who was never pregnant suddenly started nursing a baby that she could not even breast feed. They informed the mother who later reported the case to the police in Ewekoro on August 7.
“In the course of police investigation, it has been revealed that the suspect, a mother of seven, had issues with her initial marriage and got married to another ‘rich’ man, whom the nurse wanted to have at least a baby for, for reasons known to her.”
Adejobi, a deputy superintendent of police, however, said police detectives had already recovered the stolen baby alive from the nurse.
The PPRO added that the suspect had already given credible statement that would assist the police in its investigation while the nurse would soon be charged to court.
“The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abdulmajid Ali, commended the police operatives and directed that the matter be properly investigated to get useful information that will help in the prosecution of the case.
“The police boss also urged owners of hospitals or maternity homes to operate legally and employ credible and trusted nurses as well as members of staff who will be committed to their duties and respect the ethics of their profession and the laws of the land,” the police spokesman added.
