My thoughts on Trump’s victory, By Adewale Adeoye

Adewale Adeoye's Profile PhotoSome Nigerians were on 7 days fasting so that Mrs Hilary Clinton would win. Days after Donald Trump’s victory, when Americans have gone to bed, Nigerians have refused to go to sleep, some are still figuratively hoping for a rerun or a June 12 debacle.

If we have a home in Nigeria why should the US take so much of our time and energy? 300 years ago, our forbears were taken to America for slavery. They were forced at gun point. Some of them escaped and ran back. Why? Because 300 years ago, our ancestral home was better than going abroad.

Today, if you bring a plane and ask people to come to America and work on sugarcane plantation, millions will rush to go, even professors. It tells you how bad things are today. America cannot be a permanent comfort for non Americans. That is Trump-‘s message. We have to let America be. We have failed to allow America to rest. Some are even signing petitions against Trump. I hope after signing this petition we will submit it to President BUHARI or the National Assembly in Nigeria for ratification??? Why can’t we allow Americans to run their affairs? There are Americans and there are Americans.

There is a difference between Americans and “menials.” Think. Begin to create a future for your generations unborn. Stop thinking for yourself alone, think for your people, your culture, your values and the dignity of your race. Your individual pride comes to nothing when your history offers nothing on the global stage. What remains profound is not a borrowed future but rather the future that endures all generations.

Our brothers and sisters abroad should join us in fighting rogues at home who have slowed our destiny. There is no great country that defeats vagabounds in power without a lead from those in the Diaspora. Stop thinking you can fight a battle and have a lasting trophy in a foreign land. You earn respect mostly due to what your host thinks of the home that drove you away. Don’t ever think your individual economic solutions to what is a collective problem of people in your home country will earn you a lasting peace or a golden place in human history. Look back and build your own country even when it might mean fighting hard to chase away crooks and criminals in power by all means necessary.

Trumpism has become an ideology. Given the global economic downturn, I see a future where your green card will offer you neither jobs nor security but rather melancholy and misery. Americans built their trees of liberty on the sweat and blood of young men and women who made the sacrifices. You cannot harvest without tilling the soil. You want to harvest for ever where you did not own the land. That is like being a decent thief. How would you feel if some white folks are building mansions in your village and parading themselves as owners of your heavens, your stars and your ancestral land?

The Chinese or Russian Americans will earn greater respect than you because their homeland is not desolate, impoverished and farmished. Americans will respect them more than you for obvious reasons. Let the TRUMPet hit your ears loud and clear: Ajo kii dun ko Nile ma rele– ‘The foreign land should not be so sweet to the extent that history of one’s own root is lost and trampled underfoot.”

Truth is bitter- learn to close your eyes and swallow it. It is the bitter medicine that usually cures a great affliction.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m not asking you to abandon your jobs and come back home to ride Okada. I’m saying that you must start or join a movement of liberation to free your homeland from the ignoble fetters of iron and the chains of horror in the hands of criminals posing as political leaders.
