Double tragedy occurred at Achara, Ndiagu Amodu community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu state last Friday evening when the villagers lynched a visiting cleric who beheaded their kinsman.
The AUTHORITY on Sunday was told that the sin of the murdered villager, Mr. Ifeanyi Mba, was that he intervened and tried to prevent the cleric from killing a lady in the community.
The story was that the unnamed cleric had already cut off one ear of the lady, who gave her name as Mary Nnamani Chinasa, before Mba tried to intervene.
It was reported that the cleric had convinced the lady that he would pray for her but in the process of the prayer, he used a cutlass to cut off one of her ears.
The ugly scenario created by the purported praying session attracted the attention and sympathy of the late Mr. Mba, as he was passing by.
He rushed to prevent further mayhem on the lady but was violently dealt with by the acclaimed man of God who instantly struck him with a machete on the neck.
The weird action attracted a mob to the scene of the incident. The mob grew angry and beat the cleric till he died on the spot.
The Enugu state police public relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amaraizu (DSP), who confirmed the incident, indicated in his press statement that the police is yet to find out the name of the supposed cleric, where he came from and what prompted his visit to Achara, Ndiagu Amodu community since it was established that he is not a member of the community.
Amaraizu said the corpses of both the slain Ifeanyi Mba and that of the cleric have been deposited at the District Hospital Mortuary Agbani while police investigation continues. (The AUTHORITY)
