Here is the world youngest female billionaire, yet a school dropout

eliz holmesIs dropping out of college a blessing? An answer to this question is a relative one. This is because some dropped out into oblivion because their upstairs and brains could not cope with the rigor of college work and assimilation. Yet others like Bill Gate, Michael Dell, Mark Zuckerberg and the late Steve Jobs dropped out of college into success, real money and big names as they changed the world. Those who fell into the latter category left the college holding their heads in their hands while they went into lucrative philosophy of science and big thinking. With the usefulness of their brains, the world has never remained the same again as they created millions of jobs for people all over the world.

Could this be the reason why billionaire Peter Thiel now encourages young people to put aside their idea of college so as to follow their passions? May be and maybe not. In 2003, the 19-year old Elizabeth Holmes who was then a sophomore at Stanford University decided to drop out to establish her own business. Her chemical engineering professor, Channing Robertson tried to let her know the intricacy of not finishing her degree but she was determined to pursue her dream and she said: “I want to create a whole new technology, and one that is aimed at helping humanity at all levels regardless of geography or ethnicity or age or gender.”

Elizabeth Holmes then went into a technology that would make blood tests easier, simpler, cheaper and more accessible for all people. In ten years, she quietly worked on that technology and Holmes, the college dropout has joined the ranks of innovative billionaires, and she’s barely 30. She has through her company, Theranos created hardware and software that allow for blood tests to be done by pricking someone’s finger and storing the blood in a tiny vial called a nanotainer.

The bottom line is that Holmes’ company, Theranos, is now worth $9 billion and she own 50 percent of it. This has made her the youngest woman to become a self-made billionaire.
