Buhari’s legacy should be the elimination of the corrupt mindset -Ayo Akinfe

[1] I gather that Nigeria has had more stable power supply since May 29 despite the fact that President Muhammadu Buhari has not done anything about itAyo Akinfe's photo.
[2] He has not added 1MW of capacity or opened any new transmission stations but all of a sudden, the power cuts have reduced dramatically
[3] Apparently, the change has been brought about by the fear of being arrested as the PHCN boys who regularly collected bribes from generator merchants are now afraid to take money and are now doing their jobs
[4] I gather that in the Customs and Excise too, officers are terrified of Hameed Ali, so are doing their jobs without asking for bribes
[5] While all this in itself will not double the size of the Nigerian economy or provide us with the necessary infrastructure, it is a good start
[6] If you look at Nigeria when we became independent in 1960, we lacked the necessary vocational skills to build a country, the capital to invest and above all the discipline to run a modern nation state
[7] Are we seeing a genuine change in our psyche as a people? For me, until we get some discipline, embrace fair play and eschew the crazy desire to get wealthy by any means possible, we are going nowhere as a nation
[8] Where we got this me, me , me culture that makes everyone want to be a millionaire from is beyond me. Our former colonial masters did not bring it with them and it did not exist in pre-colonial Africa but alas, it has managed to infest us like a terminal virus
[9] Maybe Buhari’s legacy will be the elimination of the corrupt mindset. It could be down to the next president to deliver infrastructure and exploit the sanity in our thinking
[10] When a man like Bukola Saraki goes to enter into a deal with the opposition to shaft his own party, you can see how misguided we are as a people. He clearly does not believe in a think called fair play but alas, millions of Nigerians support him and are capable of doing the same. Can you ever imagine Liz Kendall going to do a deal with the Tories or Hillary Clinton teaming up with the Republicans just because she wants to get elected? We need this kind of discipline and sense of fair play to get going. Let is see if the general can at least deliver in this area.
